Practical help for pre-mot checks

Tell us your vehicle make and model and what you need help with. We will review the request, confirm the practical scope and discuss the next step before work is agreed.
When to get in touch
- An MOT appointment is approaching and you want obvious issues checked first
- A warning light or defective lamp may affect the test
- Tyres, wipers, washers or visible safety items need a condition review
- The vehicle has been standing and you want a roadworthiness-focused check
- A previous MOT advisory may now need attention
- You want repairs completed before presenting the car to an authorised MOT testing station
What we may check
- Exterior lighting, indicators and visible lamp operation within the agreed check
- Tyre condition and obvious wear concerns
- Wipers, washers and visibility-related items
- Visible brake, steering or suspension concerns that can be checked without conducting an official MOT
- Dashboard warning indicators relevant to roadworthiness
- Number plates, mirrors, horn and other obvious items commonly associated with MOT preparation
Possible next steps
- Minor defects identified and repaired before the official test when authorised
- A list of issues to consider before booking the MOT
- Advice that no obvious defect was found in the pre-check while making clear that this is not a pass guarantee
- Identification of a safety concern needing repair regardless of MOT timing
- Referral to an authorised MOT testing station for the actual statutory test and certificate
Before your visit
- Tell us when the current MOT expires and when the official test is planned
- Bring any previous MOT advisories if you want them reviewed
- Mention warning lights or known defects before the check
- Do not treat a pre-check as a substitute for a valid MOT where one is legally required
- If the vehicle is unsafe or not road legal, arrange appropriate transport rather than driving it
Mention any lamp, tyre, wiper or warning-light concerns ahead of your MOT date. A pre-MOT check helps prepare a car but is not an official MOT test or a pass guarantee.
An official MOT can only be carried out and recorded by an authorised MOT testing station. A pre-MOT check is preparation only and cannot guarantee a pass because the statutory test is performed independently under the official inspection rules. The MOT is also not the same as routine servicing; important maintenance items can fall outside the MOT inspection.
Send us the details of your vehicle.
Include the registration, a short description and a photo of the issue if it helps. An online request is reviewed by the workshop before an appointment is confirmed.
